Dream IT: A Technology-
Based Grant Proposal for Transformative Learning:
Students at the 4th grade level often struggle when they attempt to play the soprano recorder for the first time. This is often the first instrument they have ever tried to master. Playing the recorder requires focused thought and fine motor control. To master this instrument these one hundred students must spend many hours practicing outside the classroom. Fifty percent of my students are unable to perform proficiently on the soprano recorder by the end of this two-month unit. How am I going to teach over one hundred 4th graders to play on pitch with the correct rhythm and a steady beat? How can I support struggling students play their recorders on pitch with the correct rhythm and a steady beat during a 2 month unit (7 classes)?
The transformation I would like to see in my students is to have most of my students be able to play on pitch with a correct rhythm and a steady beat on the songs that I assign. I would also like them to become more passionate about music. I will use a web-base software program SmartMusic. SmartMusic can be accessed from the students’ home computer or from an iPad. After the student performs his song the software scores his performance and gives immediate feedback to the student telling him where they made their mistakes in the song. The parent and the teacher will also have access to this information. I will know when this integration is successful when the students earn a 90% in SmartMusic on the songs they perform.
